MicroNIR OnSite-W

Smart NIR handheld

Today, on-site analysis is almost as important as analysis in the laboratory. Small, lightweight instruments make this happen: whether plastics or natural materials, solid or liquid, transparent or colored – the MicroNIR OnSite-W is a small handheld instrument for analyzing a wide variety of samples. It enables the identification of raw materials, is suitable for at-line process control and demonstrates its flexibility in research and development. Thanks to wireless data transmission, it suits perfectly for mobile, one-handed operation. Using a tablet or toughbook, the analysis results are processed in seconds via bluetooth and are immediately at hand.

Advantages of the MicroNIR OnSite-W

  • Bluetooth connectivity and lithium-ion battery.
  • Small, rugged, lightweight – weighs only 250 g.
  • Fast, real-time, non-destructive near-infrared analysis.
  • Results displayed on tablet or toughbook.
  • Tungsten lamps with extended lifetime (> 40,000 h).
  • Rugged aluminum housing for protection against dust and water (IP67, MIL-PRF-28800F Class 2)
  • Measurement in diffuse reflection (transflectance, transmission with accessories)
  • 21 CFR part 11-, USP 1119-, EP 2.2.40 compliance and IQ/OQ/PQ documentation.

Typical applications for the MicroNIR OnSite-W

  • Qualitative and quantitative control of chemical raw materials.
  • Controls of intermediate and final products.
  • Measurements outside the laboratory.
  • Changing locations (e.g. field service)
  • Need for results directly on-site.

Plastics identification

Plastics processing plants or recycling companies depend on fast, reliable identification of delivered goods. The MicroNIR OnSite-W is the smart solution for quick, simple on-site detection of plastics. Its special feature is the clever interaction of the device with a smartphone app for outputting results: one press of a button starts the analysis and the result appears on the screen of a cell phone or tablet in a matter of seconds. With the pre-configured app (iOS), the MicroNIR onsite-W is immediately ready to measure. The clear results require no interpretation; prior spectroscopic knowledge is not necessary. All typical sample types such as granulates, flakes, refuse derived fuels, finished parts or films can be analyzed. Colored and white plastics can be identified as well as transparent plastics or novel, recyclable black polymers. In addition, no sample preparation is necessary – the samples are measured directly.

Pharmaceutical and chemical industry

The MicroNIR OnSite-W can significantly speed up incoming goods and quality inspections in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as the NIR handheld allows measurements to be taken directly where the results are needed, for example in the incoming goods department. This eliminates the need for sample transport to the laboratory or the detour via the sampling booth. In the case of transparent containers such as PE bags, the measurement is performed directly through the packaging. This means that the advantages of 100% ID testing over random and mixed sample testing can be fully exploited. With ultra-short measurement times of less than 0.5 seconds, a large number of containers can be processed quickly. Container and batch information is assigned to the measurement result via a barcode scanner. The software can be installed in compliance with pharmaceutical regulations (USP, EP, 21CFRp11). In addition, detailed IQ/OQ documents are available. As the transfer of methods from other systems is also supported in many ways, a fast and easy implementation is possible – even in a strictly regulated environment.

At-line process and end product control

The classical applications for at-line process and end-product control such as monitoring homogeneity, granularity or moisture are a prime discipline of NIR spectroscopy. With MicroNIR OnSite-W, these parameters can be determined completely location-independently and on different production lines.

Research and development

The use of NIR spectroscopy in research and development is as well established as it is wide-ranging. The MicroNIR OnSite-W takes this diversity into account by providing the right accessories for every application: Measurements of transparent liquids, tablets or granulates. With the powerful MicroNIR Pro software, qualitative (SMV, MBSD, PCA) and quantitative models (PLS) can be created. In addition, data export and import from popular chemometrics programs, such as Unscrambler, is supported.

How does the MicroNIR OnSite-W work?

The analysis technology used in the MicroNIR OnSite-W is already in the name: Near Infrared-or NIR spectroscopy for short. This is a laboratory method that has been established for generations and has been miniaturized here into a pocket format: Energy is beamed in the form of light onto the material under investigation. This light is somewhat lower in energy than the visible range of sunlight and excites the molecules of the object under investigation to vibrate. The reflected radiation is analyzed, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the structural composition of the sample. More details on NIR spectroscopy can be found here.
